When Is Peak Fall Foliage in Wakefield, New Hampshire?
Peak foliage in New Hampshire changes slightly every year depending on temperatures, rainfall, elevation and other weather conditions.
Generally, northern and higher-elevation areas change first, with color progressing southward as October continues. That makes October an exciting month to explore because you can often chase the changing colors throughout different parts of the state.
For current conditions, travelers can check New Hampshire's official foliage reports as their trip approaches.
But you don't necessarily need to leave Belleau Lake to enjoy the show.
One of our favorite things about fall here is watching the shoreline change day by day as the trees surrounding the lake become increasingly colorful.
Experience Fall Foliage From the Water
There are plenty of scenic overlooks in New Hampshire, but one of our favorite fall views is from a kayak.
On a calm October morning, paddle out onto Belleau Lake and look back toward shore. Reds, oranges and yellows surround the water—and when the lake is still, the colors reflect across its surface.
It's an entirely different way to experience fall foliage.
Bring your coffee down to the waterfront in the morning, take an afternoon paddle beneath the changing trees, or simply sit by the shore and enjoy the view.
October also brings a peacefulness to the lake that you don't experience during the height of summer.
New Hampshire tourism even highlights canoeing and kayaking as a different way to experience the state's foliage rather than seeing everything from the car.

Take an Unforgettable Fall Drive From Wakefield to the Kancamagus Highway
No New Hampshire fall trip would be complete without a scenic drive.
And guests staying in Wakefield can turn the journey itself into part of the experience.
New Hampshire's tourism office recommends Route 153 from Wakefield to Conway as an under-the-radar foliage drive. The approximately 38-mile route winds through forests, alongside lakes and through classic New Hampshire communities including Effingham and Freedom before reaching Conway and the Mount Washington Valley.
From Conway, continue onto the famous Kancamagus Highway, known locally simply as “the Kanc.”
The Kancamagus Highway runs for approximately 34.5 miles through the White Mountain National Forest, with mountain scenery and numerous places to stop along the way.
During peak foliage, give yourself plenty of time. New Hampshire's official tourism site notes that while driving the highway itself can take about 45 minutes without traffic, peak foliage traffic and stops can easily turn it into a two- to three-hour journey one way. There are also no gas stations along the 34.5-mile stretch and cell service can be limited, so fill up and download your maps before heading out.
Don't rush it.
Pack some snacks, stop at overlooks, take pictures and make a day of it.
Then come back to the lake, put your feet up and enjoy a completely different kind of fall scenery.
Go Apple Picking at McKenzie's Farm
Nothing says New England in October quite like apple picking.
A favorite nearby stop is McKenzie's Farm in Milton, New Hampshire.
The family farm offers pick-your-own apples from approximately late August through October, although crop timing depends on Mother Nature. During apple season, the farm also offers tractor hayrides through the orchard.
And don't leave without checking out the farm stand.
You'll find seasonal produce and local products, plus fresh breads, pies and warm cider donuts. McKenzie's says its cider donuts are made fresh daily during the growing season—pretty much mandatory eating on an October trip to New Hampshire.
If you're visiting around Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day weekend, check the farm's current event schedule too. McKenzie's has traditionally held its McKtoberfest celebration with apple picking, cider making, food, music, tractor rides, caramel apples, cider donuts and other fall activities.
Stop at Local Farm Stands
One of the pleasures of exploring this part of New Hampshire in the fall is simply pulling over when you spot a farm stand.
Pick up apples, pumpkins, local vegetables, baked goods, maple products or something for dinner back at the lake.
You don't even have to go far. McKenzie’s Farm Stand operates a seasonal market in Wakefield, with farm-fresh produce and baked goods brought in from the Milton farm. McKenzie's lists its Wakefield location at the corner of Routes 16 and 109.
Make a morning of it: coffee, a farm stand, a bag of local apples and then back to Belleau Lake.
Come Home to a Shoreline Fire
Some of the best moments of a fall getaway aren't on an itinerary at all.
After a day exploring New Hampshire, come back to the lake as the sun begins to set.
Start a fire in the fire pit. Pull up a chair. Bring out the blankets.
Make s'mores with the kids—or without them. Pour mugs of hot cocoa. Watch the last light disappear behind the colorful shoreline.
Those quiet October evenings are part of what makes fall at Belleau Lake so special.

After apple picking, hiking, kayaking or spending the day driving through the White Mountains, there's something especially good about stepping into a warm hot tub when the evening air has turned crisp.
And unlike summer, you may find yourself wanting to stay outside long after the sun goes down.
Bring a robe, look up at the night sky and enjoy having nowhere else you need to be.
Make Your Own Fall Weekend
You don't have to fill every hour.
A perfect October day on Belleau Lake might be surprisingly simple:
Wake up slowly and drink coffee overlooking the water. Head to McKenzie's for apple picking and cider donuts. Stop at a local farm stand on the way home. Spend the afternoon kayaking beneath the fall colors. Make dinner at the house. Then finish the evening around the fire with s'mores and hot cocoa—or soaking in the hot tub beneath the stars.
Another day can be your big adventure: Wakefield → Route 153 → Conway → Kancamagus Highway → White Mountains → back to Belleau Lake.
