Something magical is taking shape at Belleau Lake!
After years of welcoming families and guests to our lakefront vacation homes in Wakefield, New Hampshire, we wanted to create something completely different — a place that feels like an experience from the moment you arrive.
Meet The Hobbit House at Belleau Lake, our newest vacation rental and one of our most exciting projects yet.
Tucked into the landscape just steps from Belleau Lake, this one-bedroom retreat is being designed for two guests looking for a romantic, relaxing and completely unique New Hampshire getaway.
And yes... it really is being built into the earth!
Not Your Typical New Hampshire Vacation Rental
The Hobbit House was designed to feel whimsical and magical without sacrificing the comforts we love when we travel.
The earth-sheltered design blends into the surrounding landscape, while the glass-covered living area brings the outdoors in and creates a bright, open space overlooking the property.
Inside, we're combining natural textures, stone, wood and some unexpected details to create a space that feels cozy, luxurious and unlike anywhere else we've stayed.

A handcrafted 7-foot round Hobbit-style front door
King-size tree bed
Indoor two-person Jacuzzi tub
Private infrared sauna
Glass-enclosed living space
Full kitchen with green cabinetry, farmhouse sink and quartz countertops
Stone-inspired bathroom and shower
Moroccan-style doors
Private outdoor patio and fire pit
Access to Belleau Lake, including kayaks
A retreat designed specifically for two guests
Built Differently: An Innovative, More Sustainable Design
One of the things that makes the Hobbit House so unique isn't just what it will look like when it's finished — it's how it's being built.
We partnered with Stas and the team at Maximus Consult & Develop to bring this unusual vision to life. From the beginning, this was anything but a typical construction project, and we needed a builder willing to think outside the box and take on something completely different.
The structure is being built using an innovative RSIP building system made with recycled ocean plastics, turning material that might otherwise become waste into durable structural building panels.
That was something we absolutely loved about the project. We're building a home designed to blend into the natural landscape of Belleau Lake, so incorporating recycled materials into the structure itself made the concept even more meaningful.
Once completed, much of the Hobbit House will be earth-sheltered and covered with living greenery, allowing the home to become part of the landscape rather than simply sitting on top of it.
And here's one of our favorite parts: this is the first home of its kind using this sustainable building system in New England.
From an Idea to Reality
Building a Hobbit House isn't exactly something that comes with a standard set of blueprints.
There have been countless decisions along the way — from the earth-sheltered structure and huge glass living space to our handcrafted seven-foot round door, round bedroom window, Moroccan doors and all of the little details that will eventually give the home its character.
Working with Maximus Consult & Develop has allowed us to take something that started as a pretty wild idea and actually watch it come to life.
We've been documenting the entire process, and we can't wait to show you more as construction continues.
From Concept to Hobbit House
One of the most fun parts of creating the Hobbit House has been imagining what each space could become before it even exists.
We've spent countless hours playing with layouts, finishes, furniture, colors and all of those little details that we hope will make this getaway feel truly special. Along the way, we've created conceptual designs to help bring some of those ideas to life.
These images aren't photos of the finished Hobbit House — they're conceptual designs we've created to help visualize what we're working toward. Some details may change as construction continues, but they give you a peek at the vision behind the project.
From the whimsical exterior and living glass roof to the tree-inspired king bed, green kitchen, stone details and cozy spaces throughout, we're trying to create something that feels a little magical while still being comfortable, functional and luxurious.
Here’s a sneak peek at what we’re dreaming up...
A Romantic Hobbit House Getaway in New Hampshire
Our other Belleau Lake homes are wonderful for families and groups, but we wanted this property to offer something different.
The Hobbit House is being created specifically as a couples getaway.
Think slow mornings overlooking the trees, coffee by the lake, kayaking together, an afternoon exploring New Hampshire, a soak in the Jacuzzi, time in the sauna and a fire outside at the end of the night.
Once the Hobbit House opens, we're planning to welcome guests year-round, with every season offering a completely different experience.
Summer: swimming, kayaking and days on Belleau Lake.
Fall: incredible New Hampshire foliage surrounding the property.
Winter: snow-covered Hobbit House, sauna, Jacuzzi and cozy nights inside.
Spring: peaceful lake days as everything around the house turns green again.
Why We're Building It
We travel a lot ourselves, and some of our favorite trips have been the ones where the place we stayed became part of the vacation.
That's what we want the Hobbit House to be.
We take our guests' hard-earned vacations seriously. When we're creating one of our vacation homes, we think about the things we look for when we're spending our own money on a getaway — comfort, cleanliness, privacy, amenities, beautiful surroundings and those little details you remember long after you go home.
The Hobbit House is our opportunity to take that philosophy and create something completely unexpected.
